Cafe Asean Shut Down by Health Department for Mice and Roaches

GREENWICH VILLAGE — Health inspectors shut down Cafe Asean — popular with Meryl Streep, Natalie Portman and Iman — this week after finding evidence of mice, roaches and filth flies, records show.

The Southeast Asian restaurant on West 10th Street was hit with 75 violation points during the inspection on Wednesday and was forced to close, according to the Department of Health.

In addition to the vermin, other violations included food held at unsafe temperatures, surfaces that were not properly sanitized and a ventilation system that wasn't working, the DOH said.

Chef Simpson Wong opened Café Asean opened in 1996, serving cuisine from Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand. The restaurant's website lists the actresses and super model as patrons.

Café Asean was still closed as of lunchtime on Friday and must be inspected again by the Health Department before it can reopen, a DOH spokesman said.

Representatives of the restaurant could not immediately be reached for comment.
